U.S. forward Abby Wambach states no to Powerade.
Upon sitting, Wambach moved aside the bottles of Coca Cola and Powerade that organizers place beside microphones at each press conference table. You see, Coca Cola is a sponsor of the Games, and both Wambach and the team are backed by Powerade’s rival sports drink – Gatorade.
She stated she was following the example of Miami Heat forward LeBron James, whose rookie negotiations with Gatorade went sour. James has since avoided the drink, and is now pushing Powerade.
Said Wambach, “I love how LeBron did not even take a sip of Gatorade when he was cramping in the Finals.”
Both Wambach and James are key figures in their respective teams’ pursuit of gold in these Olympics. The U.S. women take on Canada in the semifinals here on Monday, the same day the U.S. men’s basketball team will meet Argentina in London.
