PORTLAND – UNC women’s soccer kicked off its 2012 season with an impressive team ranking, but fell in its season opener on the West Coast. Last week, Soccer America announced it had ranked the Tar Heels No. 4 in its annual preseason poll. UNC was one of several ACC teams to earn high numbers on the list; Wake Forest ranked third, and rival Duke claimed the top spot. Last year, the Tar Heels completed the year with a record of 13-5-2 and a bid to the NCAA Sweet 16. Friday night, Carolina began the year’s schedule with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Portland. The Tar Heels out shot the Pilots 20-7, but only 20 percent of those shots were on goal. Portland’s Ellen Parker found the back of the net just four minutes into the match, which was good enough for the win. This loss marks only the fourth season-opening loss in the school’s highly-decorated history. And, it was the first time the Pilots topped the Tar Heels in ten meetings. UNC also lost two players during the match. Senior defender Megan Brigman went down right about the time of the Portland goal. She was seen on crutches in the second half. Sophomore Brooke Elby had to be carried off the field in an air cast in the second half. The extent of either injury is unknown. North Carolina faces No. 9 Florida at home Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Carolina Nike Classic. Florida was also upset in its season opener 4-1 by Miami.
