After two consecutive double overtime victories, the Dodge City Lady Demon soccer team wanted to make things a bit easier against Wichita South on Friday night.
The Demons barraged the Titan goalie throughout the contest, forcing her to stop what she could out of 20 shots on goal. Dodge City was able to push four into the back of the net, as the Demons notched their sixth win in a row with a 4-1 road victory.
“We tried to attack them by going through them and in the second half we kind of went to a different formation, because we wanted to see how different girls looked,” stated head coach Virgil Hutchcraft. “We’re very satisfied with a 4-1 win. It’s six in a row now, and we got an opportunity to play a lot of players to improve our bench.”
Dodge started the game off on the right foot behind the talented feet of sophomore Scarlett Real, who gave the Demons a 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the contest. She picked up her second goal against South just four minutes later, pushing the Dodge City lead to two.
Freshman Cynthia Rodela, who scored the game-winning goal Tuesday night against Wichita East and was starting for the injured Erica Ramos, captured her second goal in as many games right before the halftime buzzer to give the Demons a monumental 3-0 lead.
Due to the fact that Dodge City plays Monday against Liberal, that left Hutchcraft and company with no time to work on new material before that important Western Athletic Conference game. So with a three-goal lead, Hutchcraft spent the remainder of the game spent tinkering with the lineup and using that time to grant his girls to have a mini-practice.
During that second half, the Titans were able to slip one into the back of the net against the Demons, but Dodge responded with seven minutes left to play on a goal by freshman Alondra Romo.
Their win on Friday night marks six in a row for the Demons, who now sit at 6-2 on the season and, most importantly, are 2-0 in the WAC heading into Monday night’s home contest with the Redskins.
“I think these wins have been a product of just trusting each other, and during the first two losses, we did not lose by a ton, so it was just about figuring it out,” Hutchcraft said. “The game Monday is definitely important, especially with it being on our home turf. We want to continue to defend our home and set ourselves up to make a run at the WAC.”
The junior varsity continued its hot start with a 4-0 beating of Wichita South.
Dodge’s contest with Liberal is set to start at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity, and the varsity girls will hit the field at 5:30 p.m.
