Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs is understood to be the only ‘over-aged’ United player eligible to compete at this summer Olympic Games in London.

According to a 2008 court ruling, clubs have the right to refuse to release players for the competition, as it is not on the international playing calendar.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who put an end to hope of striker Javier Hernandez being part of the Mexican Olympic team, will not stop thirty eight year old Giggs being part of the Olympic squad because the Welshman has never been at a major international tournament. It has been reported that the club have wrote to Football Association confirming Giggs’ availability for Great Britain and ruling out the participation of Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes Jonny Evans

The player himself has expressed an interest in taking part providing the Football Association of Wales grants him to.

A spokesman for the FA has declined to confirm whether a letter has been received.
