Spartan soccer team wins opener 6-2 over Spooner

Tyler Gravening scored four goals and Conner Anderson-Petroske score two as the Superior High School boys soccer team opened its season with a 6-2 win over the Spooner Rails Saturday morning at the SHS soccer field.

Gravening scored the natural hat trick with three first-period goals.

Ethan Gormong scored for Spooner in the 20th minute to make the score 3-1 at the half.

Anderson-Petroske and Gravening scored to give Superior a 5-1 lead 15 minutes into the second half.

After Levi Hansen scored for Spooner in the 63rd minute, Anderson-Petroske scored the final goal with 12 minutes remaining.

Jarret Byrnes and Nick Hesselgrave each played a half in goal for the Spartans, each finishing with five saves. Byrnes picked up assists on Superior’s first two goals.

Jake Sacco completed with six saves for Spooner.

Up next for Superior is the Lake Superior Conference jamboree on Tuesday at Duluth Denfeld. The Spartans will play Denfeld at 5:30 p.m.

The Spartans will then host Ashland at 4 p.m. Thursday. That game was originally scheduled to be played in Ashland, but had to be moved because of a scheduled conflict.
