Like many Americans before them, Daniel Zott and Josh Epstein wonder why Europeans are so attached to the the game of soccer, even at minor-league levels. Their theory — soccer gets all of the EU’s ideal athletes. Not so in the States.
Oct. 28, ESPN The Magazine: We started thinking about what American soccer might look like if all children grew up playing soccer instead of football or basketball. What if Barry Sanders had been a central midfielder? What if former Olympic champion sprinter Michael Johnson had been a center forward, or Magic Johnson had been a goalkeeper?
That leads Zott and Epstein to draw up their Dream Team for unquestioned USA dominance in the World Cup, featuring none other than Megatron and LeBron at forward — “the most impressive group of strikers the world have ever seen,” they note.
