Elton John Achieves EGOT Status with Emmy Win for Farewell Concert Special
Legendary musician Elton John completed the prestigious EGOT feat on January 13th, 2024, by winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) at the 75th annual ceremony. As the executive producer and star of the Disney+ special “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium,” capturing his final North American show, John joined the elite group of entertainers who have earned Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards.
John’s journey to EGOT included a Tony Award for composing the music for 2000’s “Aida,” and a lasting Broadway impact that began with songs in “Bette Midler’s Clams on the Half Shell Revue” in 1975. His most significant contribution, however, came in 1997 with the music for Disney’s “The Lion King,” still running after 26 years and reaching millions worldwide.
Beyond “The Lion King,” John’s Broadway contributions include music for “Lestat,” “Billy Elliot,” and several other productions. He even earned a Tony nomination as a producer for “Next Fall” in 2010.
John’s Oscar collection boasts two awards: one for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King,” and another for “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from his biopic “Rocketman.” He’s also a five-time Grammy winner out of 35 nominations, with notable wins for “That’s What Friends Are For” (with Dionne and Friends), “Basque,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “Candle in the Wind,” and “Aida” (shared with Tim Rice).
In a surprise turn of events, “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium” triumphed over the 75th annual Tony Awards telecast in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category, solidifying John’s remarkable achievement and leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
