Ghazal Singer Pankaj Udhas passed away due prolonged illeness on 26 Feb, 2024 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai . Daughter Nayab Udhas announced in Instagram post.
Pankaj Udhas is an Indian ghazal and playback singer. He was born on May 17, 1951, in Jetpur, Gujarat, India. He is the youngest of three brothers, all of whom are singers. His eldest brother, Manhar Udhas, achieved some success as a Hindi playback singer in Bollywood films. His second elder brother, Nirmal Udhas, is also a well-known Ghazal Singer and was the first of the three brothers to start singing in the family.

Udhas started his career by releasing a ghazal album titled Aahat in 1980 and subsequently recorded many hits like Mukarar in 1981, Tarrannum in 1982, Mehfil in 1983, Pankaj Udhas Live at Royal Albert Hall in 1984, Nayaab in 1985 and Aafreen in 1986. After his success as a ghazal singer, he was invited to appear and sing for a film by Mahesh Bhatt, Naam. Udhas rose to further fame for singing in the 1986 film Naam, in which his song “Chitthi Aayee Hai” (the letter has arrived) became an instant hit.
Udhas has won numerous awards for his singing, including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song “Chitthi Aayee Hai” in 1987. He has also been awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2006.
Udhas continues to be one of the most popular ghazal singers in India. He has performed all over the world and has released over 50 albums. He is also a successful playback singer and has sung songs for many Bollywood films.
